Munichen by Rudolph Voits ,Itaglio Reproduction of Etching, Color

ca. 1919-1925 (?) ItaglioReproductio of color etching by Rudolf Voit - Munich Marienplatz, St. Mary'sColumn, Old City Hall

Beautiful vintage art. It measures 8 x 11 inches.

In good condition - some wear to bottom edgefrom being kept in my parents’ photo album. Apparently, this art print was used as a ChristmasGreeting in the 1950's.

There is an authentication labelwhich reads “Genuine Intaglio Reproduction of an etching by Rudolph Voits.”

Thetitle is Munichen written in the lowerleft, with the artist’s name, on the lower right.

The attached authentication readsin part: “This plate will be destroyed at the end of a LIMITED EDITION. Produced in the Studios of THE PROCESSCORPORATION CHICAGO. “

Also reads: “These etchings are suitable for framingpurposes as they are of unusual fine quality, the work of nationally knownartists.”

The print is on heavy art paper, the border of which is embossed with European winter scenes in a snow-blanketedvillage, complete with a bell ringer, royal carriage, holly leaves, snow flakes, etc.

The print itself is a vividlycolored scene of a city scape which includes a bell tower, 1920's automobile, buildings, a city statue with people standing around it. Research indicates it is, perhaps, St. Mary’sColumn and the Old City Hall.

Research Note(per [link removed by ]) : “What Is A Print?"

In the most general terms, aprint is a piece of paper on which a design has been imprinted from a matrixmade of some selected medium, usually stone, wood, or metal. In an originalprint the matrix is made by hand, as opposed to a reproduction, which is madeby a photomechanical method. Any print issued prior to 1900 is considered to bean antique print, though non-mechanically made prints published before WorldWar II are sometimes considered to be antiques.

Prints fall into three generalcategories depending on their method of production: relief, intaglio, andplanographic.

In an intaglio print the image isprinted from a recessed design in the matrix, so that the printmaker createsthe matrix by cutting into it the design he wishes to imprint on the paper. Tocreate an intaglio print the ink is pressed into the design cut in the matrix, the surface is wiped, and the ink is then transferred to the paper underpressure. This process creates the platemark which is the hallmark of anintaglio print. Examples of intaglio prints include engravings, etchings, aquatints, stipples, and mezzotints.”
