With stock firmware, the device has been out of support since 2022 (at that time, Sophos introduced new software requiring at least 4 GB RAM and retired all devices with less than 4 GB RAM). With alternative firmware, such as OPNsense (or pfSense, or OpenWrt), the device can stay in service for years to come. If you're interested in purchasing this device with firmware other than OPNsense, let us know.

To test the device and make port functions consistent with on-device labeling, we made a few changes to the initial OPNsense configuration. A detailed configuration note will be provided to the buyer. Alternatively, the buyer could simply reset the software to its initial state.

The device runs on an Intel Atom E3930 processor with 2 GB of RAM and a 64 GB SSD. The processor supports AES-NI crypto. Networking (four Gigabit ports) is handled by Intel i211 network interface cards. One of the ports is "twinned" (accessible through either RJ-45 connector or SFP connector). Please note that we have verified that the SFP port is operational, but we cannot guarantee compatibility with all SFP cartridges.

The device contains a Qualcomm Atheros wireless card (Wireless-AC standard), which is not supported on OPNsense or pfSense. If you would like to purchase this device for use as a wireless router, we highly recommend OpenWrt, which we can install and configure for you; just ask (if you decide to go that route, we will include a pair of aftermarket antennas at no additional charge).

The device is implemented in a desktop form factor. The case is all metal and exceptionally rigid. There are two power connectors for redundant power supplies.

The device is passively cooled and completely silent.

The device is in excellent physical condition (please review the photos; note that we a running several consecutive listings for identical devices, so the device pictured may or may not be the device you receive, although the photos are representative of the condition of all devices in the series).

A power supply unit (alas, only one) with a threaded coupling (no more accidental unplugging!) is included.
