☆ RARE ☆ VINTAGE ☆ ORIGINAL ☆ Chuck Rogers "RAIN AFTER THE RUN" 1978 Nike Running Poster AKA...PEACHTREE BATTLE OF ATLANTA. This Extremely Rare ORIGINAL 1978 Nike Poster has been in storage since the 80's. It has NOT been pinned, mounted or etc. and is in overall good condition, ready to be framed and added to your collection. The original billboard ad this poster was commissioned from was used as a backdrop in the character Alec Newbary's (Judd T. Nelson) apartment in the 1985 movie "St. Elmo's Fire". (see in pics) Not to mention there is an actual story behind the poster not just some random photo Nike decided to make a billbroad/poster out of. This photo was taken by an Atlanta photographer named Chuck Rogers after the runners had crossed the finish line during the 1978 AJC Peachtree Road race. Only moments before the first runners crossed had it begun to rain. The man on the ground in the white shorts collapsed and died of a heart attack immediately after the race. The shirtless man who is looking up was mentally challenged and this race marked the first major accomplishment in his life. The fact that he was in front of the man who had collapsed and later died was completely coincidental. And so was Chuck's timing for taking the photo. He didn't find out about either of the men until after the picture was taken. The AJC Peachtree Road Race: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race 10K is a 10-kilometer run held annually in Atlanta, Georgia on July 4th. The Peachtree Road Race is the world's largest 10 kilometer race. The Peachtree Road Race was started in 1970 by the Atlanta Track Club. The first year approximately 110 runners ran from the old Sears building at the corner of Peachtree Road and Roswell Road to Central City Park (now Woodruff Park). The race was sponsored by Carling Brewery. In 1977 over 6,500 runners competed, overwhelming the capacity of Central City Park. As a result, in 1978 the course was moved to starting at Lenox Square and finishing at Piedmont Park. The Peachtree Road Race has become an event important in Atlanta culture. In addition to the 60,000+ participants there are approximately 150,000+ observers who line both sides of the entire course to cheer and support the runners.Photographer: Chuck Rogers has been a full-time professional photographer for more than thirty years. He is a member of the Professional Photographers of America and past President of The American Society of Magazine Photographers, Southeastern Chapter. His creative photography has appeared on the covers and inside of many national and international magazines such as "W" (Women's Wear Daily), Paris Match, Life, Time and National Geographic. An innovative photographer, Rogers is known for everything from award-winning corporate annual reports to album covers for top recording artists. He's best known for the NIKE series of billboards showing runners cooling in an atmospheric mist after a mini-marathon race.Nike Billboard History: Nike, the number one manufacturer of footwear and apparel was founded in 1964 by track coach and runner duo Bill Bowerman and Phillip Knight as Blue Ribbons Sports, later becoming Nike, Inc. in 1978. Nike didn’t begin running TV ads until 1982. Previously, Nike concentrated on sponsorships, celebrity athletes’ endorsements including both professional athletes and college teams as well as news papers, magazines and billboards as forms of advertisements. The first professional athlete endorser was Ilie Natase a Romanian tennis player and the first track and field athlete to endorse the brand was Steve Prefontaine.NOTE: Sorry for the LONG description.
